A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM JOHN POWERS
PRESIDENT OF THE EVANSTON WILMETTE GOLF COURSE ASSOCIATION

After this mild winter, we are all looking forward to a new season at Canal Shores. The course is now open and the date of the kickoff event for season passholders to pick up 2016 bag tags and passes is April 24. Stay tuned for details.

I encourage all our neighbors and supporters to visit http://www.canalshores.org/canal-shores-100 to learn about Canal Shores 100, our master planning project for the next 100 years of our course. You may have read preliminary information about our efforts, but this is still a work in progress and there is a lot of work to be done.

Our goals are solid: Canal Shores will serve future generations of golfers and meet their needs; provide the community with multi-use recreational facilities with a focus on families and youth; and demonstrate best practices in environmental sustainability by maintaining, nurturing and enhancing ecological health and natural habitat of our 40 acres along the waterway of the North Shore Channel.

We are in the development stage of planning. We have been and will continue to solicit input from all quarters to ensure that Canal Shores remains a welcoming and accessible course. We hope to have plans in place as we near the celebration of our 100th year of golf along the banks of the North Shore Channel in 2019. With the support of the USGA and ASGCA, we have the seed money and talent available to us to begin this process. We will be undertaking a major campaign to fund what will be a long term investment in the course.

I welcome your questions and suggestions as we develop a plan and structure to bring the community in to tune and improve our plan. And, we ask your patience as we work to assure that Canal Shores endures.

I would also like to thank our generous donors and volunteers, and the hard work of our contractors who rebuilt our cart bridge over the North Shore Channel. Our Course is an all-volunteer effort, and only private funds were spent to maintain this public convenience.  The support for this project was outstanding and much appreciated.

On a sad note, it's with sorrow that we report the loss of our ranger and a course regular, Mel Berkowitz. He died suddenly in his home at the age of 70. For further details, please click here. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Eleanor RevelleLawrence Hemingway
On behalf of our Board and the golf community, I want to welcome Eleanor Revelle, recently appointed to serve as 7th Ward Alderman, and Lawrence Hemingway, the newly designated director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services for the City of Evanston. We look forward to working with them in coming months.

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

We have been awarded a grant under the Coastal Management Program of the NOAA, administered by the IDNR. This is great recognition of our effort to develop an ecological plan that will preserve and protect this beautiful setting for the community through our commitment to protecting our habitat. The Grounds Committee is in the process of identifying a landscape planner to develop a long term plan for habitation and grounds at the course. We are also working on full Audubon Certification – a great distinction for golf courses throughout the country.

You can read our ecological plan and learn more about Audubon at this LINK.

JUNIOR GOLF SPOTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE

Canal Shores junior golf camps and clinics create opportunities for junior golfers to learn, play and enjoy the game of golf. We are dedicated to having junior golfers be the best they can be, on and off the course, while creating an environment with emphasis on safety and etiquette.

MEMORIALS

We have begun a program to create memorials at the course for a family member, loyal golfer, your business, even your pet! You may want to donate a bench (thank you to our Women’s Golf League headed by Florence Malizola for the benches on Central Street). We thank our generous neighbors Anne and Tom Hampson for a tree that now graces the 12th fairway in memory of their dear pet Abbey. Learn how you can be part of this and contact our team for more information.
